Turn Your Space into a Perfect Summer Getaway

Jul 15, 2024 | Residential

Are you in desperate need of a perfect summer getaway but don’t have the resources or time to go on one? Or maybe you just got back from vacation and could use another!

On the bright side, an inability to travel shouldn’t stop you from indulging in a little at-home escape. Travel destinations are one of the biggest sources of inspiration for our clients when we’re working with them to co-create their space’s concept.

You can use our approach to create an everyday adventure in your home. Read on to learn how!

Destination: Tanzania

Starting things off for those who’d like to press the rewind button on a previous vacay! Tanzania was always a dream destination for Concetti Lead Designer + Brand Ambassador Taylor Grup and her husband, Cody. When they got there, they had no idea it would one day inspire their daughter’s safari-themed nursery in Growing Up, Not Out!

They incorporated various elements that transport them back to their trip. For example, the framed photos by the rocker feature some of the animals they saw there. The crib nook’s jungle motif wallpaper, elephant rocker, Seletti monkey lamp, and Justina Blakeney tiger rug from LoLoi lean into the theme and nurture baby Blair’s imagination.

This project also proves how elements within a themed room can still age well. Although it stores her clothes and accessories and doubles as a library/changing area, Blair’s textured Noir dresser will serve her for years to come. Similarly, her Nestig Wave Crib is able to convert into a full crib and eventually a toddler bed.

Destination: New York City

Can’t shake your big city dreams? Don’t sweat it – there are many ways to bring the city into your space! While not directly inspired by New York City, Hype on Stripes embodies its energy. From the bright pops of color reminiscent of Times Square to the MoMA-esque art pieces, we’re transported to some of NYC’s most iconic scenes when we flip through these photos.

However, reaching your destination inside your space isn’t just about the visuals…it also needs to feel like the place. Hype on Stripes checks those boxes, too. From the profane pillow and windows overlooking the city skyline to the vinyl records and guitars just waiting to be played, the condo is bursting with details that capture NYC’s lively, unpredictable nature.

Destination: France

Looking for something a bit more romantic or historic? Paris of the Midwest showcases how color ways, tasteful homages, and materiality can come together to transport you to another place AND another time. Named after Detroit’s “Paris of the Midwest” moniker, it honors our city’s history as well as the art, artists, and architectural styles to come out of France.

Detroit Wallpaper Co. is known for their out-of-this-world designs, and it was a no-brainer to source an oversized mural of Claude Monet’s Sunset on the Seine at Lavacourt. Blending Parisian influence with the existing architecture of the Bingley Fales House resulted in a space saturated in intricate trim work, arches, bold colors, and of course the signature white marble.

Destination: Scandinavia

If you’re seeking to create a serene getaway in or near nature, you’ll want to consider filling your vision board with Scandinavian design. It focuses on clean and simple lines, minimalism, and functionality that never sacrifices beauty.

This was the right fit for our Rose Hues in Riverview client, too. She wanted a tranquil space where she could enjoy her golden years. We achieved the look and feel with low-profile, simplistic furniture lines to accentuate the greater focus on nature and serenity, as well as muted colors and warm, inviting textures to spark coziness. The large walls of mirrors opposite the windows make the Detroit River a main focal point, easily spotted from every angle.

Destination: Santorini

It seems like everyone and their brother have vacationed in Santorini, Greece in the last few years…and who can blame them? It has some of the best weather, beaches, food, and scenery in the world! Although Santorini’s signature blue and white homes only date back to the region’s political climate in the 1960s, the colors are now synonymous with the island. Luckily for you, they may be the secret to curing your FOMO.

While it’s located in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Just Us 2 in A2 exudes Santorini’s effortless elegance, partially due to its color scheme. Other elements like custom millwork, furniture, and lighting helped create the look and feel of an oasis for the two empty nesters who call the condo home.

Creating a space you yearn to go back to isn’t just about curbing your vacation cravings…it’s about cultivating an authentic life and being brave enough to be boldly you!

Ready to use interior design strategy to plan your next staycation?

LET’S CONNECT!

What does “dopamine décor” mean to you?

Rachel: It’s the pieces that make you happy when you see them. An instant smile or giggle. For me, it’s unexpected whimsy and humor. In my house, I’ve got a brass fox head wearing sunglasses and a monkey-head planter with a gold tooth. They never get old. It’s about surrounding yourself shamelessly with things that make you happy. I can’t wait to bring pieces like this into my new home, Divinely Detroit, the historic church located in Indian Village.

How did you land on the name Moxie?

Rachel: At Concetti, our brand persona is “genuine moxie” which means kind, calm, loving, but bold in who you are. We’re always building our clients up to take that bold, courageous step. Moxie is the bold part. The “I don’t need permission” part. When you choose dopamine décor, you’re choosing to surround yourself with pieces others might not understand, but you love.

Who is Moxie for?

Rachel: It’s for anyone who’s been told they’re too much, too loud, too bold. It’s for the person who wants that little empowering piece in their day whether that’s a trucker hat, a beautiful candle, or funky lamp. It’s for people who want to surround themselves with pieces lovingly crafted and curated to give you a little dose of empowerment.

How do you stay creatively energized when building something from scratch?

Rachel: I’ve never subscribed to the idea that your life should follow a certain timeline. Since I was 16, I knew I wanted to be an interior designer. That’s 23 years of being dedicated to one decision, and it still feels good and in alignment.
When I create something new, it’s like a spark goes off. I listen to that inner knowing. I tell my team, “One step in front of the other.” It might be clumsy, but you’ve got to start moving.

What design rule do you love to break?

Rachel: Any of them. If I want to turn my dining room into a recording studio or a kids’ playroom, then I will, and you should feel empowered to, as well. The only rules worth following are the ones that make you feel good in your own space.

What advice would you give to creatives who feel “too much” for the design world?

Rachel: There’s no such thing. What you’ve been told is “too much” is your superpower. That’s what makes you different and magnetic. Stand in your power. Make decisions from alignment, not shame or guilt. Be unapologetically you because that’s when you really shine.

Favorite dopamine décor brands or artists?

Rachel: Regina Andrew (Detroit-based and stunning), Seletti (monkeys holding lightbulbs, peacock lamps), Noir (the hand chair!), Bold Monkey, Zoe Bios (customizable art), and Eric & Eloise (quirky brass animal heads). I make them weird with purple lights in my basement because it makes me laugh every time.

What do you hope people feel when they bring home a Moxie piece?

Rachel: I want them to feel excited and happy. I want unboxing to be an experience that exceeds expectations whether it’s something you wear and feel empowered in or something in your home or business that gives you that hit of joy every time you pass it.

What does success look like for Moxie?

Rachel: Moxie is more than numbers, it’s a movement. It’s about inclusivity, empowerment, and telling people they’re perfect exactly as they are.

One mindset shift that changed everything for you as a founder?

Rachel: Realizing that everything I need is already within me. I can surround myself with mentors and partners, but at the end of the day, I’m the only one living my truth.

Advice for creatives carving their own path?

Rachel: Persistence wins. Your journey is your own. Do the things that light you up and keep going. Pause to reflect on what’s working, what’s draining you, and what you can add back in to make you excited again. There’s no one else like you so own it.
